The Life They Choose Not To See

My greatest fear is not death,
Nor clowns,
Nor spiders.
Nor snakes,
Nor heights.
Nor people,
Nor places,
But instead of life.

So beautiful, they exclaim!
Fools they are,
Fools I say.

Sickness and heartache,
Longing to leave,
Poverty and rape,
That is the life they choose not to see.

They drown their problems,
With money,
With things.
Their lies swish through their mouths,
Like water,
Like the sea.

But I see,
And you see.
We are the people they ignore,
The people they choose not to speak of,
The people better left unheard.

For we know the world is
Full of pain,
Full of dirt.
Full of people like you and me,
Living in poverty and grief.

The untouchables,
The poor,
The unstable,
The people too rotten to ever be green.

Excuses they make,
So many that they silence our screams.
Religion,
Race,
Money,
Why can’t they see?

We are all bones that long to be,
Loved and whole,
Rich and full.

Yet, they won’t hear that,
Not a sound shall get through,
Because it’s coming from people like me,
And people like you.
